Andrew Neil Puts Brexit Rejoin Argument Under the Microscope on Question Time

Andrew Neil delivered a blunt response to the latest push for Britain to move back towards the European Union during BBC Question Time, challenging what he saw as some of the simplistic arguments being used by those advocating closer European integration. Neil took particular aim at the suggestion that Britain has been left economically flatlining by Brexit, pointing out that several major EU economies have also experienced sluggish growth. His argument was straightforward: blaming Britain's economic performance entirely on Brexit becomes considerably harder when countries that remained inside the EU are facing many of the same problems.

Neil also challenged the idea that returning to the single market or customs union would automatically solve Britain's economic problems. Germany, France and Italy have all experienced weak growth despite remaining within the EU, while UK GDP grew by 1.3% in 2025, compared with 0.9% in France, 0.3% in Germany and 0.7% in Italy. Those figures formed an important part of Neil's wider point, because they directly challenged the portrayal of Britain as uniquely suffering while the rest of Europe prospers.

The exchange highlighted the growing divide between the political arguments surrounding Brexit and the economic reality being presented in the latest figures. Neil's intervention was essentially a demand for the Rejoin argument to be tested against what is actually happening in Europe today, rather than relying on the assumption that Britain's problems can simply be attributed to leaving the EU. Whatever view someone takes on Brexit, his figures put a sizeable hole in the claim that EU membership automatically protects countries from economic stagnation.
