The Elephants that came to dinner | Mfuwe Lodge, Zambia
The Elephants that came to dinner | Mfuwe Lodge, Zambia
At a five-star lodge in Zambia, a bizarre phenomenon is stumping wildlife experts and delighting tourists. An elephant family, led by a matriarch named Wonky Tusk, is overtaking the lobby. Though elephants can be violent in the wild, here they climb the stairs of Mfuwe Lodge and grace past reception without bumping a chair. Why the paradox? Wildlife cameraman Nathan Pilcher is on a mission to find out. What he discovers may reveal elephants to be far more intelligent than we could've imagined.

Self filling water bottle that turns air into drinking water
This is Fontus, a self-filling water bottle that turns air into drinking water. It extracts humidity form the air and condenses it into drinkable water. Humid air flows into the device and hits a series of hydrophobic surfaces. The hydrophobic surfaces turn the water vapor into actual droplets.A small solar panel on the top of Fontus keeps a batter charged. It includes a filter at the top to keep dust and bugs our of the water. It can produce 0.5 quarts (0.5 liters) of water in 1 hour.

Arsenio Hall stands his ground against protesters; supports gay guests.
A group of protesters confront Arsenio during a taping of his show. He stands his ground, flabbergasted at the notion he would not feature a gay guest. Aired sometime in 1993/1994, I believe.
Arsenio Hall spoke about this incident back in 2013
"That legendary battle. That’s one interesting thing of coming back. I went through a lot of things, and now I get to do it in a different climate. When I analyze the Queer Nation battle now, I think about why it bothered me so much. It’s because I knew who I was. I knew a lot of my friends didn’t come to my defense when everyone was in the closet. I can give you 20 guests on my show in a month [who were gay], but they weren’t talking about it. Luther Vandross ain’t talking about it. He can’t at that time. Louie Anderson can’t then. Ellen can’t then. Rosie can’t then. They couldn’t even say, “Leave [Arsenio] alone!” Only that writer in New York, Harvey Fierstein [repeats Fierstein’s name in an incredible impersonation], was sitting on my couch and talking about issues. I had to let the world be what it is and catch up to the moment, but I knew what I was doing."

Atomic Trampoline
This amazing toy gives us an insight into the behaviour of metals at an atomic level!
There are two perspex tubes, and each has a circular lump of metal at the bottom. They appear pretty much identical. If you drop a ball bearing into the first tube, it falls onto the piece of stainless steel at the bottom, and it bounces a few times before stopping. The kinetic energy that it had originally has been dissipated. Some of it has been converted into sound - we hear the ball bearing hitting the metal. However there are other ways in which the kinetic energy is dissipated.
Most metals, including stainless steel, have a crystalline structure. This means that the atoms in the structure arrange themselves in an ordered manner, in which a small repeat unit called a 'unit cell' can be identified. This unit cell, which in some cases contains just several atoms, is repeated in all three directions, and in this way, the entire structure is built up. This unit cell description of a crystalline structure implies the atoms are arranged in perfect order, which is only true in an ideal solid. All crystalline solid structures contain missing atoms, called defects, impurity atoms of other elements, and misaligned planes of atoms called dislocations, or 'slip planes'. Because this helps the atoms to slide past one another, this is an important way in which energy is absorbed.
Now, drop a ball bearing into the other tube, and watch what happens. The ball bearing bounces back almost to the point at which is was dropped, and it continues to bounce for a considerable length of time. How is this happening?
On top of the lump of stainless steel is a disc of a metal alloy, called 'amorphous metal'. This alloy, which was discovered in 1993, consists of 5 metals - Zirconium, Beryllium, Titanium, Copper, and Nickel. The atoms in an amorphous material are not arranged in any ordered structure, rather they have a tightly-packed, but random arrangement. Amorphous materials are formed by cooling the liquid material quickly enough to prevent crystallization; the atoms do not have time to arrange themselves into an ordered structure. Liquidmetal® is an amorphous alloy (also known as a metallic glass) containing five elements, with the elemental composition is 41.2% zirconium, 22.5% beryllium, 13.8% titanium, 12.5% copper, and 10.0% nickel.
Because of the varying sizes of these atoms, and their random arrangement in the solid, there are no groups of atoms that can easily move past one another. Because there are no planes of atoms in an amorphous material, the atoms are gridlocked into the glassy structure, making the movement of groups of atoms very difficult. One consequence of this atomic gridlock is that some amorphous metals are very hard. Liquidmetal® is more than two times harder than stainless steel. However, besides being a very hard material, this amorphous alloy has a low elastic (or Young's) modulus. The combination of hardness and elasticity of amorphous metals gives them their unusual properties.

Their progress and changes in leadership take place over twenty-five years, from the 1970's into the '90's, and are inseparably intertwined with the dark history of modern Italy: terrorism, kidnappings and corruption at the highest levels of government.

It's now 1981 and the Rome crew are in disarray: Libanese is in the morgue, full of holes, which sparks a race to find the killers and exact revenge before the police can make arrests. Driving a Ford Model T Is a Lot Harder Than You'd Think! We Tried It
Jan. 21 -- Starting in 1908, Henry Ford sold his novel Model T cars as the first to be really accessible to the masses. What's more, he marketed them as easy to handle for casual drivers and (gasp!) women since they started with a button rather than a crank. Thing is, those old Model Ts were still pretty complicated to drive. Bloomberg Pursuits' Hannah Elliott took a 1914 Model T for a spin but first she needed a driving lesson. Dragon 2 Propulsive Hover Test
On November 24, SpaceX’s Dragon 2, powered by eight SuperDraco engines, executed a picture-perfect propulsive hover test at the company’s rocket development facility in McGregor, Texas.
Eight SuperDraco thrusters, positioned around the perimeter of the vehicle in pairs called “jet packs”, fired up simultaneously to raise the Crew Dragon spacecraft for a five-second hover, generating approximately 33,000 lbs of thrust before returning the vehicle to its resting position. This test was the second of a two-part milestone under NASA’s Commercial Crew Program. The first test—a short firing of the engines intended to verify a healthy propulsion system—was completed November 22, and the longer burn two-days later demonstrated vehicle control while hovering.

Admitted drug dealers get high and call the Idaho cops
REXBURG -- A call made to 911 by a man moments before he and a friend were arrested for trafficking 20 pounds of marijuana has many shaking their heads.
The call, released by the Rexburg Police Department and obtained exclusively by EastIdahoNews.com, was made by 22-year-old Leland Ayala-Doliente on Jan. 23, 2015.
Ayala-Doliente was traveling from Las Vegas, NV to Bozeman, MT with 23-year-old Holland Sward. Court documents show the men were using marijuana during their trip and when they entered Idaho, they felt they were being followed by undercover police officers.
Once they reached Rexburg, the pair exited Highway 20, parked their car and called 911.
Here’s some of the phone call:
Ayala-Dolitente: Hi, uh, we’re the two dumb asses that got caught trying to bring some stuff through your border and all your cops are just driving around us like a bunch of jack wagons and I’d just like for you guys to end it. If you could help me out with that, we would like to just get on with it.
Dispatcher: You got caught doing what?
Ayala-Dolitente: Ahh…okay. Um…We kind of got spooked here trying to bring some stuff across your Idaho border.
Dispatcher: Ok.
Ayala-Dolitente: And, yeah. A bunch of your cops driving around in a bunch of civilian cars not wanting to pick us up. I don’t know what’s the deal. I was just wondering if you could help us out and just end it.
Dispatcher: Ok…um….
Ayala-Dolitente: Yeah…if you could call one of them. I don’t know. It’s getting cold out here man. I just want to get warm and just get on with this whole thing so…
Dispatcher: Ok. Where you at right now?
Ayala-Dolitente: University Boulevard right next to the gas station and Applebee’s. All your buddies are around us so if you could help us out that’d be great.
Dispatcher: Ok…alright. Is it just you or is there anybody else with you?
Ayala-Dolitente: It’s me and my buddy that I brought with me and then we have a dog that we were gonna bring back to it’s owner but…
Dispatcher: Oh ok.
Ayala-Dolitente: She’s a really nice dog. She’s not mean. She’s a pitbull…
Dispatcher: Oh…cool.
Ayala-Dolitente: She’s really cool in the car. She could just some food too.
Dispatcher: Ok. What was your name man?
Ayala-Dolitente: It’s LeLand.
Dispatcher: Leland…okay. Hold on just one second okay. Stay on the phone with me.
Ayala-Dolitente: Alright. Thank you.
(speaking to Sward) He’s a nice guy.
Want me to jump in the air and click my heels twice or what?
Dispatcher: Do you guys have any guns or weapons or anything on you at all?
Ayala-Dolitente: Nope we don’t have any of that stuff with us. Just a bunch of snacks and stuff.
Dispatcher: Alright. I just wanna make sure. They’re just curious.
Ayala-Dolitente: Yeah, yeah. We tried walking away from the car a couple times and that didn’t work. We tried waving them down and that didn’t work so I don’t know what’s going on here.
Dispatcher: Ok. I do have one of my marked units. He’s on his way over there so he’s on his way to meet you.
Ayala-Dolitente: Alright. Thank you.
When police officers arrived, they say both men had their hands behind their heads. Court documents show Sward said to an officer, “We got caught and we’re surrendering.”
Investigators found 20 pounds of marijuana inside a dog cage that the suspects had placed on the sidewalk.
Ayala-Dolitente and Sward were each charged with one felony count of trafficking marijuana.
Sward pleaded guilty to possession with intent to deliver, amended down from an original charge.
Sward was given a five-year sentence to prison. District Judge Greg Moeller suspended the judgment and placed Sward on probation for five years and ordered him to serve 30 days in jail.
Ayala-Doliente was sentenced to 1 1/2 to eight years in prison. Moeller increased the sentence after Ayala-Doliente tested positive for marijuana, cocaine and oxycodone on his sentencing day.
