Barack Obama remains one of the most recognisable figures in modern American politics, but his presidency was also marked by promises that later came under serious scrutiny. One of the most damaging was his repeated assurance that, under his healthcare reforms, "if you like your health care plan, you can keep your health care plan". Obama made the claim repeatedly, including without qualifications, despite the Affordable Care Act ultimately resulting in millions of cancellation notices in 2013. PolitiFact later named the statement its 2013 "Lie of the Year", noting that the promise was impossible to keep as stated and that Obama subsequently attempted to add qualifications that had not been present in his earlier statements.
