Geodesic sphere puzzle (truncated icosahedron)

If you want to build this: I cut two chunks of 2x4 that were each 20" long. These were then ripped into 14 strips, which were eventually cut in half. Of these 28 total pieces, 18 were used for hexagonal and 10 were used for pentagonal tubes. This provided me with enough of the 1/2" thick parts to make two complete puzzles.

I usually call the trick featured in this video "the bucket trick." It will work to find the miter angle for any non-tapered bucket- it tells you what to set your saw at. This trick will work no matter how many sides the bucket has. It is especially useful for multi-sided trim-work, and to avoid making costly mistakes. If you don't remember what to set your saw at when finishing an octagonal window frame, just divide the whole way around (360) by the number of sides (8 in this case), and then split that into two... and the miter cut is 22.5°.
Think about it in the case of a picture frame: 360/4= 90; 90/2= 45.

It is important to keep in mind that this is just a trick, because a saw that is set to 0° is actually cutting at 90°, so what a table-saw claims is a 30° cut is actually creating a 60° angle on the board. A saw cuts the angle that it claims away from 90°. So a 30° cut is really 30° away from 90°, which is 60°.

The formula at the end may be further simplified to 180/n (when n=number of sides), but I have decided instead to present it the less reduced way as means of a mnemonic device. It is simple to remember that a bucket is a circle, and a regular convex polygon also closes around itself in much the same manner, so both are in a state of 360° completion to their continuous circuit. Further, it is not difficult to remember to cut the result in half, as a means of mental distribution over both pieces of the miter. This entire metaphor is flawed, and it is only a conceptual interpretation that works pragmatically; it is by no means representative of any sort of mathematical truth or revelation- in fact, quite the opposite. I just try to find ways to remember things, and I hope that this can help you as well.

As for the geodesic dome construction toy, I think I will let you interpret that for yourselves. It was a pleasure to build, and it is quite satisfying to assemble. To the puzzle purists: Please don't scream "this isn't a true puzzle!" until you have actually assembled it before. Besides, the term "puzzle" has a wide range of application if you think about it enough. All of life is a puzzle; we are immersed in an endless series of events, each of which require constant decision making on our part. Such a condition is the quintessential enigma- a continuous puzzle. Processing done... bye!

Singing man, aquaplanes and flips car (caught on inside camera)

I was traveling from Indianapolis to Whitewater, WI for a practice weekend with Machine Ultimate. I was going 70mph (speed limit) on I65 north. I travel the 3-4 hours by myself every time and use singing as a way to pass time, and critique it later. At this point I was practicing a nasal type voice on a Casting Crowns song when the crash happened. I was watching the road and saw nothing that caused me to worry. Simply hydroplaned in a heavy rain. My car slid sideways, and then was completely backwards by the time I slid off the road and went down a small hill. I hit a mile marker sign (230) on my way off the road. Here are two of the most amazing parts: I sustained NO injuries. Not even a scratch. And my car took NO mechanical damage and is completely driveable. Only body damage.

Throwing stones in a abandoned oil shaft

Founded an abandoned and open oil shaft from old oil rig. We threw a few stones in it and the result is what you can hear and see.

The video couldn't really record how strong and deep the sound was when it got out from the shaft.

The sound waves where extremely loud especially at the end of each video - when a big and loud boom came out (like big gun firing).

After the boom, the rock seemed to have gone even deeper as high pitch noise was still coming out from the tube (like the rock was still hitting metal walls).

What was that big boom at the end of each recording??

Justin Johnson on the 3-string shovel guitar

Justin Johnson on the 3-string shovel guitar

Primitive Technology: Spear Thrower

A spear thrower is a simple tool that allows the user to throw a spear further than by hand alone. It is a small length of wood with a hook in the end that fits into a notch in the back of the spear. The extra power and distance gained by the thrower is due to the extra leverage it gives.

I cut a small branch with a minor branch coming off the side. I shaped the minor branch into a spur to fit into the end of the spear. The thrower was about 65 cm long.

For the spear, I cut a thin sapling approximately 2 m long and about 1.5 cm thick. I carved a cup in the end of the spear for the spur to fit into. Then I bound the back of the spear with bark fiber to prevent the wood from splitting. The head of the spear was simply charred in the fire and scrapped against a rock to sharpen it (during practice the head regularly breaks so only a sharpened tip is used to save work).

To use the spear thrower, the spur of the thrower is inserted into the cup of the spear. The spear and thrower are held at about shoulder height. The thrower is quickly flicked forward and the spear propelled towards the target. As the spear leaves the thrower it bends slightly storing energy until it jumps of the spur. During flight, the flexible spear wobbles and oscillates paradoxically giving the spear some stability in flight.

The throws in the video show what can be done in one afternoon of practice (my arm got sore and I wanted to start on other projects). I hit the target a few times at a distance 15 m. It is more powerful than a spear thrown by hand alone but is difficult to learn. The spear I made could have been a fraction lighter and so would have greater speed. Another improvement would be to add flights to the spear so it would be more accurate and fly straighter (like an atlatl).

The extra energy gained from a Woomera's (Australian spear thrower) use has been calculated as 4 times that of compound bow (Wikipedia). It's easy to make (this took less than a day) but requires lots of training to become accurate.
